Useful Information to Prepare Campaigns

Trailer dimensions and space requirements

In principle, our lidar can be easily operated at almost any place which fulfils some basic conditions. In that case, the lidar is ready to use within a few hours. Anyhow, to prepare an experiment at a foreign institute or an remote area, it is useful to consider the following information - this would significantly facilitate the measurements.

The trailer is air conditioned, and thus the lidar can work from about -20°C (to be tested) to +40°C (tested) environmental air temperature in the vertical mode, and from about -5°C to +40°C (both tested) in the scanning mode. The lidar worked successfully inside the trailer on a ship during ACE2 for five weeks.

Further Comments:

  • Add about 4 m length for the drawing vehicle plus some space to manoeuvre the trailer, as it is very hard - almost impossible - to do it by hand.
  • The trailer is 2.72 m high. Some bridges or passages are lower and it is difficult to drive backwards.
  • In case of slant measurements under 20° elevation through the back door a space of not less than 4 m behind the trailer must be closed for the public.
  • The ground below the trailer should be firm enough to support the pillars of the trailer ( see picture: prepare_greece.jpg ), especially in case of rain. If this is not so, we have to discuss how to stabilize the ground.
  • Minimum weight of the trailer: 530 kg (439 kg trailer, 77 kg air conditioning, 14 kg table).
  • Maximum weight of the trailer: 2000 kg, of the vehicle (Mercedes Benz 211 CDI): 2950 kg
  • Maximum dimensions:
    • all closed: width 2360 mm, height 2720 mm, length 6050 mm
    • all open: width 2930 mm, height 3320 mm, length 7125 mm
    • all closed with vehicle (length of Mercedes Benz 211CDI: 5585 mm): length 12600 mm

Electricity

It is possible - although not tested - to carry gasoline generators with the lidar for independent power supply. We need:

  • 3 phase 32A or
  • 3 phase 16A or
  • 3 times 1 phase 16A

Cables and Connectors

We currently have prepared these power cables and connectors:

  • 400V 32A cable with 16A CEE connectors ( see picture of the connectors picture of the connectors and specifications specifications ), length = 50 m
  • 400V 32A cable with 32A CEE connectors ( see picture of the connectors picture of the connectors and specifications specifications ), length = 20 m
  • 220V 16A cable with German mains plugs, length = 15 m
  • 220V 16A cable with German mains plugs, length = 20 m
  • converters from 16A female to 32A male connector and the reverse

more cables are available if neccessary

Measured power consumption

  • Laser: about 1.4 kW average, but with high pulse currents
  • Air conditioning: average 10 A one phase, 50 A start-up current (our 16 A fuses don't blow out )
  • PC, light, (heating) 2 kW approx.

We sometimes encountered a voltage drop over long or weak mains connections due to the high pulse current which recharges the laser power supply capacitors. This troubled the laser power supply, which stopped working. Therefore 3 phase 32A connctions are preferable.
