The left column shows the deep layer shear, i.e. the vector wind difference from 850 mb to 200 mb, while the right colum shows the separate contributions from upper level shear, the vector wind difference from 500 mb to 200 mb and the panel below it, the low level shear, the vector wind difference from 850 mb to 500 mb. Regions with a shear magnitude exceeding 15 m s-1 are shaded pink, those with magnitude less than 10 m s-1 are shaded light blue and the region between is shaded white. Contours of shear magnitude have a 5 m s-1 spacing.
