Surface polarization

Reflection of polarized radiation at the surface is described by the bidirectional polarized reflectance distribution function (BPDF).

Ocean

  • Typical BPDFs (analytical formulas) for ocean surfaces derived based on empirical fits to PARASOL data are provided in the following publication: F.-M. Bréon and N. Henriot. Spaceborne observations of ocean glint reflectance and modeling of wave slope distributions. J. Geophys. Res., 111(C06005), 2006.

Land

  • Typical BPDFs for land surfaces have been derived based on empirical fits to PARASOL data. Analytical formulas are provided in the following publication: F. Maignan, F.-M. Bréon, E. Fédèle, and M. Bouvier. Polarized reflectances of natural surfaces: Spaceborne measurements and analytical modeling. Rem. Sen. Env., 113(12):2642-2650, 2009.
