Overview about the BBC campaign with Cabauw, The Netherlands, as focus point

Two days during the BALTEX BRIDGE Campaigns (BBC) will be used to evaluate

the short-term cloud and precipitation forecasts of 3-dimensional models in the domain of a 100 by 100 km regional network in the center of the Netherlands with the central station Cabauw. Special focus will be on the effects of horizontal and vertical resolution

the microphysical properties of liquid water clouds as modelled by spectral 1-D models. Advanced ground-based (at Cabauw) and airborne (tethered balloon and 3 aircraft) observations are available for validation.

Simulations

Similiar to the model evaluation performed within the EU-project CLIWA-NET short-term forecasts (+12 to +36 h) will be analysed in detail. Model runs should be performed with different vertical and horizontal resolutions with fixed boundary conditions. The results from the model simulations will be compared to observations. A detailed description about the model output was prepared by Erik van Meijgaard (KNMI). Please put the results on a ftp server and mail me address.

For the evaluation of microphysical properties ground-based remote sensing observations provide profiles of temperature, humidity, liquid water content (LWC) and effective radius using the integrated profiling technique (IPT, Löhnert et al., 2004). In addition to aircraft observations of diverse microphysical and radiative properties measurements from the tethered balloon system ACTOS (IfT Leipzig) are available.
