UV Index
For public dissemination with respect to risks of UV overexposure, an UV index has been established at the "WMO meeting of experts on UV-B measurement, data quality and standardization of UV indices" at Les Diablerets, Switzerland,25 - 28 July 1994. (WMO/TD-NO.625)
The basis is utilization of the C.I.E. action spectrum normalized to 1.0 at 297 nm. (Erythemal weighted irradiance) The index is expressed by multiplying the weighted and spectrally integrated irradiance in W/m² by 40.0. This will lead to an open-ended index which is normally between 0 and 16.
At the UV group of the Meteorological Institute, University of Munich a model is used, which allows to calculate UV indices on the basis of spectral irradiances. This model, STAR, has been developed at our institute. It is employed by the German Weather Service, DWD, to forecast the UV-Index in Germany.
Comparison of UV-Indices is made in COST action 713
"UV-B Forecasting"
